The pinch of red acrylic nails bit into the soft muscle of Alicia’s bare upper arm. Karen squeezed hard, leaning her weight into the grip to yank Alicia forward.

Pain spiked sharp and hot, but Alicia did not pull away. Retreating only gave an aggressor leverage. Instead, she stepped forward into the space between them, driving her right elbow upward through the weak seam of Karen’s thumb and forefinger. The grip snapped loose with a dull pop of tendon against bone.

Karen blinked, her jaw slacking as her balance rocked forward onto the balls of her feet.

Before the woman could reset her stance, Alicia planted both palms against the loud fuchsia blossoms of Karen’s silk blouse.

She shoved.

It was not a frantic push. It was a single, locked-arm extension fueled by the coil of her hips and the dry traction of her bare soles against the flagstones.

The impact drove Karen backward two full paces. Her flat sandals skidded across the pale stone, shedding friction against the smooth masonry.

“What are you—”

The metal clipboard tore free of Karen’s manicured fingers. It hit the patio with a flat, ringing clatter, the aluminum corner gouging the stone before sliding six feet toward the sun lounger. Loose white inspection forms spilled from the brass clip, skittering across the dry grout in the afternoon breeze.

Karen took another wild step in reverse, her heels hunting for solid ground.

Her face twisted. The practiced smirk of administrative authority dissolved into raw, wide-eyed panic. She clawed at the air with both hands, searching for a wall, a chair back, or Alicia’s wrist, but there was nothing within reach except empty heat and sunlight.

Her left heel met thin air.

Her shoe sole scraped the rounded concrete edge, finding no resistance, no friction, no floor. The bullnose coping ended beneath her arch. For half a second, Karen hung suspended above the drop, her body rigid, her arms windmilling in jagged, desperate arcs against the blue sky.

Her capri trousers billowed as her knees buckled under her. A sharp cry choked in her throat as gravity took her hips.

Karen plunged backward into eight feet of blue water, disappearing beneath a deafening crash of displaced foam and spray.
