The next evening, Caleb and Linda stood by the open gate with two short glasses and a bottle between them. The wall behind the gate was rebuilt, the capstones reset, the hatch marked and locked but still visible. The roses had been replanted in a new bed beside it.
Linda unfolded a survey and tapped the rear corner with one finger.
“Two inches,” she said.
Caleb took the paper. The old post line sat two inches inside her side, exactly where the new survey showed it.
He looked at her, then at the line, and let out a breath through his nose.
“Your fence,” he said.
She gave him a look that was almost a smile.
He poured the bourbon. The sun dropped low behind the oaks. Somewhere down the block a mower shut off. The gate stayed open. They drank beside it without speaking, with the hatch at their feet and the yard stretched quiet between them.
