A Reckoning in the Hall

That night the HOA hall filled with folding chairs and heat. People talked over one another until Delaney stood up and knocked a knuckle on the table. The room quieted.
Someone blamed Gerald. Someone blamed Linda. Someone asked why the county had not stopped it sooner.
Caleb was sitting in the back row when he got to his feet.
Forty years of paper, he thought, and they still want a face.
He stepped into the aisle.
“This started before any of you bought here,” he said. “Before your roofs, before your patios, before your fences. The records were hidden. The site was capped. That wasn’t one widow’s choice.”
Nobody moved.
Caleb planted both hands on the chair in front of him. “It took all of you paying taxes, signing forms, and not asking where the ground water went.”
The room held that for a beat.
No one spoke.
