The excavator reached the park by midmorning.

Families were kept behind orange tape. The machine sat on the edge of the grass with its bucket lowered like a jaw. Caleb stood near the trench with his hard hat on, while Linda watched from the path with her hands folded at her waist.

The bucket bit down ten feet, then eleven. Clay came up in wet slabs. A shout went from the hole.

The operator lifted away a rusted rim.

Then a drum face broke loose under the bucket tooth, and black sludge seeped into the dirt around it.

“Hold,” Delaney barked.

The crew worked slower after that, cutting by hand around the first barrel. They found the second, then the third. By late afternoon they had lined up sixty-three rusted drums in rows on the tarps, each one leaking a little at the seam. The smell rolled across the park and stayed there.

Caleb stood beside the manifest board while a junior inspector copied numbers. One company name was stamped in the margin of an old haul ticket. It matched the one on the side of a faded truck receipt in Gerald’s box.

Walter Hale Hauling.

He looked up as a county SUV rolled in.

Officer Mason Hale got out without his jacket. He crossed the grass slow, a folder tucked under one arm. He stopped at the edge of the tarp line and set the folder down.

“My father kept these,” he said.

Inside were cash receipts, run logs, and a small metal lockbox with a dented lid. Hale opened it and slid out a ledger wrapped in an oilcloth sleeve. The pages were filled with his grandfather’s hand. Dates. Night routes. Weight totals. Payment notations in a column marked CLOSEOUT.

Caleb turned one page and saw the same load count written three times.

Hale rested a hand on the box. “He never said where it went.”

Linda looked at the ledger, then at the drums, then at the green beyond them. Her shoulders went still.
