Margaret Chen’s building sat between a title company and a closed florist. The brick front looked tired. The lobby light was off. A yellow tape strip crossed the glass.

Aaron parked at the curb and looked up at the fourth-floor windows.

“They’re closed,” Elena said.

He was already out of the truck.

The stairwell smelled like old carpet and radiator dust. On the fourth floor, Margaret’s suite door stood behind a chain-link gate of municipal stickers and a padlock. Yellow code violation tape crossed the frosted glass in two strips. One sticker had been slapped over the brass nameplate. Another covered the mail slot.

Aaron stared at it for a beat too long.

“Margaret Chen, Esq.” still showed under the tape.

His knuckles tightened. The skin went white over the joints.

Behind him, Elena climbed the last step with one hand on the rail. “Aaron.”

“I see it.”

“That wasn’t there last week,” she whispered.

The lock on the gate was new. So was the city seal.

Then, below them, a car door shut hard enough to ring through the stairwell. Another followed. Heavy shoes hit the lobby tile in a fast, measured line.

Aaron took the stairs two at a time, Mia’s hand warm in his, Elena close behind in his old flannel and sweatpants. The downtown building smelled like old paper and wet brick. On the fourth floor, yellow tape crossed Margaret Chen’s frosted glass in a hard X.

A city violation notice sat under the seal. Another one was stuck crooked over the lock. Both had Margaret’s name on them, along with dates from three days ago.

Aaron stared at the padlock, then the tape, then the dead dark behind the glass.

“Code complaint,” Elena whispered. Her chin tucked into her collarbone. “He moved first.”

Mia peered around Aaron’s hip. “Is this the nice lady?”

“She was,” Aaron said.

He tried the knob once. It held. The metal felt cold through his thumb. He looked down the hall at the other suites. One office had its blinds shut. Another had a broken plant in the window.

“Was she mean?” Mia asked.

“No.”

Aaron crouched, keeping one hand at the small of Mia’s back. “Stay here. Do not touch anything.”

She nodded and hugged her coloring book to her chest.

He caught Elena’s elbow and turned her away from the door. “Tell me everything.”

She swallowed. “Richard had legal people drafting the fire drill reports, the audit trail, all of it. If anyone asked for the server logs, they’d already been moved. The backups too.”

Aaron’s jaw tightened. He could hear Margaret’s voice in his head, quick and tired: They will bury this in paperwork if you let them.

“Why come here?”

“Because she was the only lawyer who kept your file,” Elena said. “I hoped she hadn’t been scared off.”

Aaron looked back at the yellow tape. It had city seal numbers printed in black. A violation like this did not happen clean. It had weight behind it.

Below them, a car door slammed.

Then another.

Aaron straightened. He moved Mia behind him without thinking.

Heavy footsteps hit the lobby tiles, fast and deliberate. A man’s voice rose, low and polished, speaking to someone out of sight.

Aaron’s hand tightened on the padlock until the skin whitened over his knuckles.

Elena heard it too. Her eyes went to the stairwell.

“Too late,” she said. “He found us.”
