Elena stood by the stove in his kitchen, wrapped in a towel that had gone gray at the hem. Her hair clung to her jaw in wet ropes. One wrist was red where the towel had been twisted around it too hard.

“Put this on.”

She looked at the plaid flannel, then at him. “It smells like machine oil.”

“Then it’s clean enough.”

He turned his back while she pulled it over her shoulders. The shirt swallowed her frame. The cuffs covered her hands. His spare sweatpants hung low on her hips, rolled twice at the waist.

When he faced her again, the sight hit harder than the cold air leaking through the window frame. She had the look of someone who’d stepped out of one life and into another by mistake.

Mia peered around the kitchen door, one hand on the frame. “Why is the pretty lady wearing Daddy’s work shirt?”

Aaron kept his voice flat. “Because hers got ruined.”

Mia studied Elena for a long second, then held up a sheet of paper. “I drew her.”

Elena took one careful step forward. “For me?”

Mia nodded and crossed the room. The drawing showed a woman with a cape, a square house, and a dog with seven legs.

“I made you a crown,” Mia said. “You look like a runaway princess.”

Elena’s mouth twitched once. Her fingers found the empty ring finger and rubbed it.

Aaron went to the blinds.

Below, the alley sat slick with drizzle and old grease. A black SUV idled at the curb, lights off, exhaust pushing a pale plume into the morning. Two men in dark coats stood near it, heads angled toward his building.

His jaw tightened.
