The black sedan rolled out from under the mansion lights while the chandeliers shrank behind it, all glass and gold and people who had stopped pretending to be kind.

Daniel kept his hands flat on his knees. The driver said nothing. Neither did he.

A minute ago, Vanessa had stood in the gala ballroom with her silver pen in hand and a smile sharp enough to cut paper. She had held up the divorce papers for the table to see, right there by the dessert display and the ice sculpture, and said, “Don’t look so shocked, Daniel. You were always the practical one. Take the money and find yourself a smaller life.”

Her mother had laughed first. Not loud. Just enough.

Daniel had looked at the signature line, then at Vanessa’s jeweled fingers. He had signed without a word.

Not because he had nothing to say. Because she still didn’t know what she was signing away.

Mercer Core had built the booking architecture under Apex Nexus three years back, back when Blackwell Hotels still called him “our little computer project” and let him sit in the back of meetings with a laptop and a coffee. The licenses, the maintenance keys, the covenant monitor that watched the whole chain for fraud and breach — all of it sat under contracts the Blackwells had signed and then stopped reading.

By the time the sedan hit Lakeshore Drive, his phone vibrated once.

A text from Marcus Vance.

7:00 AM. All 32 regional clusters will flag maintenance. Board notices queued. Do not answer calls until I say.

Daniel read it twice, then locked the screen.

So it had started. Not with shouting. With clockwork.

He leaned his head back against the seat and watched the city slide by in strips of light. Somewhere behind him, in that mansion, Vanessa was still surrounded by crystal and applause, still trying to turn humiliation into a story she could live with.

He didn’t need to see it to know she was already losing the room.

His phone went dark again.

He let it stay that way and said nothing to the night.
