At noon, the utility van pulled up to the curb. The technician, a man named Rick in a dark blue jumpsuit, walked around to the glass meter on the side of Daniel’s garage. Daniel met him by the gate.

“You requested an audit on late-summer draw,” Rick said, tapping his screen with a rubber-tipped stylus. “I ran the interval data from the Smart Meter feed.”

“What do you see?” Daniel asked.

Rick pointed a gloved finger at a high bar on the screen graph. “Right here. Every Tuesday and Thursday between midnight and three in the morning. Spike jumps eight to ten kilowatts. That’s not a chest freezer cycling on. That’s an electric vehicle load.”

“On my bill,” Daniel said.

“On your bill,” Rick agreed. He printed a receipt-sized summary from his belt printer and handed it over. “It’s a secondary load draw. If you didn’t buy a car, somebody else used your receptacle.”

Daniel folded the thermal paper and slid it into his shirt pocket. The paper felt stiff and flat against his chest. It was factual.

He walked back to the kitchen and placed the paper next to his printed camera log on the table. Susan looked up from her crosswords, her pen hovering over the newsprint.

“The utility confirmed it,” he said.
