The principal’s office smelled of dry-erase markers and old drip coffee. Principal Chang slid a thick manila folder across his mahogany desk, stopping it six inches from Marcus’s hand.

“It’s already been served,” Chang said. “Delivered to Mrs. Prescott’s front door by district security at seven thirty this morning.”

Marcus opened the folder. On top lay a notarized legal trespass order, Monica’s full name printed in bold black letters above two dense paragraphs of state code. Below that, a single line stated that setting foot on any Cedar Grove School District property—grounds, parking lots, or athletic fields—would result in immediate arrest.

Vice Principal Rodriguez adjusted her navy clipboard. “Her school access badge is deactivated. Her name is flagged at every entrance desk. If her car enters the pickup loop, security will call municipal police before her tires touch the curb.”

Nia sat beside Marcus, her fingers gripping the silver hand-rims of her wheels. She looked up from the paper on the desk. “What about Tyler?”

“Tyler is fine, Nia,” Denise said softly from her spot near the window. “We spoke with his father early this morning. Tyler did nothing wrong. He won’t be disciplined or treated any differently by his teachers.”

Marcus closed the folder with a quiet snap. “Yesterday she called my daughter’s chair a public asset. She told me we had to share it.”

“That was theft of specialized medical equipment,” Chang said, resting his forearms on the blotter. “And physical harassment of a student. The district takes full legal responsibility for what happened on our sidewalk yesterday. It will not happen again under my watch.”

Nia let out a long breath, her shoulders dropping two inches as tension left her frame. “Thank you, Principal Chang.”

“You don’t need to thank us for doing our job, kiddo,” Chang said.

Marcus tucked the folder under his arm. He reached for the back of Nia’s seat to roll her out, but paused when Denise stepped toward them near the door. She kept her voice low.

“Marcus, before you take her to homeroom, check your phone.”

Marcus raised an eyebrow. “What for?”

“Three separate parents filmed the entire thing from the pickup line,” Denise said. “By nine o’clock last night, the raw footage was uploaded to the Lakeside Meadows neighborhood forum. The whole subdivision knows what she did.”
