Evelyn took the lantern from the hook by the stove and led the way to the pantry. The bikers watched her hands more than her face. That was fine. Men who carried guns always watched hands when they were tired.

She moved aside a shelf that held flour tins and a row of peach jars. Behind it, set into the wall, was a narrow door with a brass latch dulled by age. Jonah frowned when she opened it.

“Down,” she said. “If you can climb stairs, you can climb back up.”

The steps were steep and bare wood, and the air changed fast. Cooler. Damp. They came out into a storm cellar lined with shelves of canned beans, jars, blankets, a coil of rope, first aid boxes, and two kerosene lanterns. At the far end, behind a steel desk bolted to the wall, sat a radio set with a headset hanging off one side like a dead ear.

Wade stopped short. “You’ve got a ham rig down here?”

“I’ve got what Samuel put in,” Evelyn said. “He built this place for tornadoes and trouble. Same weather, different name.”

Danny hugged himself and stared at the blankets. Cole eased him toward a chair. Russell let out a low whistle, then cut it off when Evelyn looked at him.

Jonah’s eyes took in every corner. “You knew we might need this.”

“I knew the roads were bad. That’s enough.”

She set the lantern by the radio, switched on the battery lamp, and adjusted the dial until the room filled with a faint hiss. Then she picked up the microphone and spoke into it like she was ordering feed.

“Red Mesa relay, this is Carter Farm on County Eighteen. I need sheriff contact and a plow chain. Six men sheltering here. One injured. Possible armed group in the area.”

Static crackled. A woman’s voice came back thin but clear. “Copy, Mrs. Carter. You stay put. I’m patching this to Weaver Trucking and station two.”

Jonah stared. “You know the relay?”

“I know people who answer when I call.”

She handed the headset to Wade. “You listen. If they come back, you tell them the road’s blocked east of the split and there’s fuel at Miller’s if they need it.”

Then the house shuddered. Not the wind. Engines.

Everybody heard it. Even Danny.

Evelyn killed the lamp and looked up the stairs. “Well,” she said, reaching for the shotgun by the door, “they found you.”

The first engine sound came back through the snow like a hand on a door.
