Danny sat at the end of the kitchen table with a blanket over his shoulders and both hands wrapped around a chipped mug he hadn’t touched. His knee bounced under the wood. Wade stood near the sink with a waterproof pouch laid open in front of him, the kind hunters used for tags and maps. Jonah stayed by the stove, still as a fence post, while Cole blocked the hallway and Russell leaned on a chair with his arms folded.

Evelyn set a pan of water on the burner and waited for it to warm. “All right,” she said. “Talk straight.”

Wade nodded once and pulled out a ledger wrapped in plastic. Two memory cards followed, then a cracked phone with the screen spidered from one corner. “We pulled this from Silas’s saddlebag and a locked case in his trailer. Numbers, route sheets, donor lists. Messages too.”

Jonah kept his eyes on her face. “He’s been skimming for years. Relief funds. Ride money. Donations meant for widows and kids. We found transfers, false receipts, a lot of cash that never made it to the chapter account.”

Russell gave a short laugh that had no humor in it. “Hundreds of thousands. Maybe more.”

Evelyn opened a drawer, took out a pencil, and set it beside the ledger. “Show me where the lie starts.”

Wade spread a page flat. He pointed at columns, dates, initials, then at a line where the totals jumped. “Here. Same payout, different signatures. And here, three cash withdrawals in one week. Not ride expenses. Not even close.”

Danny swallowed. “He saw me.”

The room went quiet.

Jonah turned his head. “Say it.”

Danny rubbed his palms hard against his jeans. “At the gas station outside Kingfisher. I didn’t know he was there. I had the pouch under my jacket and he looked right at me.”

Evelyn reached for the blanket, pulled it higher around Danny’s shoulders, and looked at Jonah. “So he knows you have proof.”

“Enough to start looking,” Jonah said. “He’ll have men on the road, maybe county men too. We didn’t stay long enough to be sure.”

Wade shut the phone and slipped it back into the pouch. “If he checks the chapter house, he’ll know we’re gone.”

Evelyn took the ledger, opened it to the first page, and ran one finger down the column. Her mouth tightened at a name. “Silas never was careful with other people’s money.”

Jonah looked up fast. “You know this book?”

“I know the kind of man who keeps it.” She closed it and set it on the table between them. “And I know you’re not safe just because you got through the snow.”

A gust hit the house. The window rattled.

Cole pushed off the wall and looked toward the front room. “We should move.”

Evelyn slid the ledger into the pouch and tied it shut herself. “No. First, you tell me who’s coming.”
