Ayla slid three blue binders across the mahogany conference table, knocking a stack of federal sub-folders out of alignment.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Vance did not look up from his tablet. “Mrs. Cipriani, our financial forensic team spent thirty-six hours tracing those Zurich shell accounts. The paper trail cold-stops at the Channel Islands.”

“They stopped looking at bank routing numbers,” Ayla said, flipping open the third binder to a laminated banquet schedule from November. “They should have looked at what Jean was serving.”

Vance paused, his stylus hovering an inch off the glass.

“Jean had strict preferences for executive dinners,” she explained, pointing her finger at a yellow line item. “He insisted on a private-label French pinot noir. It wasn’t on the hotel’s master wine list. He paid a six-thousand-dollar import fee out of pocket, then reimbursed himself through catering logistics.”

Matteo leaned his shoulders against the wall by the door, his arms folded across his dark jacket. He stayed silent, keeping his weight back to leave her the floor.

“Look at these three invoices,” Ayla said, laying paper slips across the table. “Varenne Advisory Group paid a forty-thousand-dollar retainer for a dinner that never happened in October. But a boutique importer in Brooklyn shipped twenty cases of that wine to a private dock in Red Hook under Varenne’s corporate account.”

Vance leaned forward, his elbows dropping onto his blotter. He picked up two receipts, holding them to the overhead LED light to read the tax ID numbers. “The same freight handler.”

“The same freight handler,” Ayla said. “And the invoice approving the drop point was signed by Victor Soren’s personal procurement agent. Jean wasn’t just hiding stolen charity money. He was using Dubois Global’s event customs exemptions to move Soren’s luxury shipments into New York.”

The prosecutor stared at the paper slips, then raised his head. He reached for his desk phone and hit a speed-dial button. “Get the customs enforcement team in here. We have the transport chain.”

Ayla closed her binder and capped her pen.

Across the room, Matteo caught her eye. A quiet smile touched his lips as he watched her, realizing her coordinator’s eye had cracked what expensive auditors could not touch.
