Ayla pushed open the screen door of the Queens brick two-family house. Inside, Rachel Kim sat on a worn vinyl sofa, holding a lukewarm mug of tea with both hands. Her toddler slept in a portable crib near the radiator.

“I didn’t mean to run,” Rachel said, her eyes fixed on the floor. “Then this came to my personal phone at noon.”

She turned the screen toward Ayla. The photograph was clear, taken through a tinted window. It showed a yellow building, a chain-link fence, and Rachel’s daughter in a pink jacket as a teacher guided her inside. The text underneath read: Kids shouldn’t wander near traffic.

Matteo stood beside the dining table, his jaw set. He pulled out his phone and hit a speed-dial button. “Luca. Send four security personnel to this Queens address right now. Prepare the Bedford house for two guests by six o’clock.”

“End the call, Matteo,” Ayla said.

Matteo kept the phone against his ear, his dark eyes fixed on her. “Jean is taking pictures of a three-year-old girl, Ayla. I am not waiting for official paperwork while someone sits outside a preschool.”

“If you stash her on a private estate behind armed guards, Jean’s attorneys will say we bought off a primary witness,” Ayla said. She stepped between him and the front door, dropping her hands to her sides. “We don’t use private muscle. This photo goes to the Assistant US Attorney tonight. Direct witness intimidation carries federal prison time that Jean cannot buy his way out of.”

Matteo studied her face for a long second. The tension in his shoulders didn’t disappear, but he lowered the phone. “Luca, cancel the Bedford setup,” he said into the receiver. “Contact our federal contact instead. Tell them we have concrete evidence of felony witness tampering.”

Rachel leaned forward, letting out a shuddering breath as she buried her face in her hands. “Will the prosecutors actually act on it?”

“Yes,” Ayla said, sitting beside her on the couch to touch her shoulder. “This isn’t about missing event budgets anymore. It’s criminal.”

A sharp chime broke the heavy quiet. Ayla pulled her phone from her coat pocket. An email notification popped up, sent directly from Jean Dubois’s personal address.

Ayla. No lawyers, no Matteo, no press. Meet me at Midtown Plaza at eight tonight. Just us, and we end this whole thing.
