Four Lines of Truth
They Laughed at Her Cheap Dress—Until the Most Feared Man in the Ballroom Took Her Hand · Capítulo 6
By ten in the morning, three tabloid blogs had published identical articles calling Ayla a corporate spy who seduced a client to mask operational theft. A leaked screenshot of an altered invoice bore her forged signature at the bottom.
Matteo stood by the island counter, his phone pressed to his ear. “Put five attorneys on the publisher by noon,” he told his chief legal officer. “I want full retractions before the market closes.”
Ayla reached across the stone top and pressed her palm over his phone screen. “Hang up, Matteo.”
He lowered the device slowly. “They are lying about your work.”
“And if your lawyers fight it, the story becomes a billionaire silencing press coverage of his wife,” she said. She opened a blank text document on her laptop. “I handle event liability with facts, not muscle.”
For four hours, she wrote and deleted. Her first draft was three pages long, filled with explanations about how Jean altered vendor bids and dumped administrative duties on junior staff. She read it aloud, heard the defensive tremor in the words, and hit backspace until the cursor blinked on a blank white page.
She stripped out every emotion, every adjective, and every plea for understanding. She listed dates, invoice numbers, and public corporate registry filings.
By three in the afternoon, her statement was four lines long:
“I served as Lead Coordinator for Dubois Global from March 2021 through October of this year. At no point did I handle secondary financial distribution or vendor escrow accounts. All logistics approvals under my signature correspond to verified physical deliveries at the venue site. Complete ledger records have been submitted for independent audit.”
Matteo leaned over her shoulder, reading the screen. “That’s it?”
“It doesn’t leave them anything to twist,” Ayla said. She clicked publish on her personal site, then crossed her arms. “Let them try to sue four sentences of verifiable dates.”
A soft chime sounded from her inbox. An unread message sat in her primary folder, sent from an encrypted address.
Ayla clicked the subject line. The body contained two lines of text: Look at the 2022 Beaumont Hospital gala catering expenses. Jean paid three hundred thousand dollars for flowers that were never delivered.
