Mabel Laurent pinched the hem of Ayla’s silk skirt between two manicured fingers, turning her head toward the terrace glass.

“It’s synthetic, isn’t it?” Mabel asked, loud enough for three nearby board members to pause their champagne glasses mid-lip. “The drape gives it away. My seamstress wouldn’t let me leave the house in polyester.”

Ayla straightened her spine and dropped her hands to her sides. She had spent three weeks coordinating the lighting grid, the seven-course dinner, and the floral arches for the Grand Plaza ballroom. Her dress had cost four hundred dollars at a small alteration shop in Greenwich Village, sewn by hand with double-stitched interior seams.

“The fabric is silk crepe, Miss Laurent,” Ayla said.

Jean Dubois stepped into the circle, smoothing the silk lapels of his tuxedo. He gave Ayla a tight, disappointed smile that made his eyes wrinkle at the corners.

“Ayla manages our logistics, Mabel, not our guest dress code,” Jean said, his tone dripping with fake paternal concern. “We shouldn’t expect her to understand the standards of a three-million-dollar charity drive. Though next time, Ayla, perhaps ask HR for a clothing stipend before representing Dubois Global on the floor.”

A quiet chuckle rippled through the group. Mabel’s friends leaned in, their diamond necklaces catching the light under the high marble ceilings.

Ayla kept her voice level. “The logistics are fully operational, Mr. Dubois. The main auction begins in four minutes.”

“That will be all,” Jean murmured, flicking his wrist toward the service doors. “Go check the caterers.”

Before Ayla could step back, heavy footsteps clicked against the polished floor.

The crowd parted. Matteo Cipriani walked straight past two city councilmen and a hedge fund manager, his dark suit tailored with sharp, simple lines. He didn’t look at the crystal chandeliers or the glass view of the Empire State Building. His eyes stayed locked on Ayla.

He stopped beside her, stepping close enough that his shoulder blocked Mabel’s view. He placed one broad palm flat against the small of Ayla’s back, then reached down and took her right hand, sliding his fingers through hers.

The quiet hit the room like a dropped tray.

Mabel froze, her wine glass wavering in her hand. Jean’s mouth opened slightly, his tight smile vanishing as he recognized the city’s most reclusive infrastructure titan standing on his company’s hired carpet.

“You look stunning, sweetheart,” Matteo said, his low voice carrying through the hush. He raised her knuckles to his lips and kissed them. “Are we ready to sit down?”

Jean stared at Matteo’s fingers locked around Ayla’s wrist, his face draining of color.
