The Line Not Crossed
One Dance Before Midnight · Capítulo 8
Red emergency lamps clicked on over the fire exits, staining the dark room rust-colored.
Gabriel shouted something lost beneath the shrill wail of the casino alarm. The muzzle of his gun swung toward the desk, but Liam surged forward, throwing his weight and the heavy oak chair into Gabriel’s legs. Wood cracked. Gabriel cursed, his balance gone, and slammed hard against the edge of the green felt table.
Victor was on him before he hit the rug.
He stepped inside Gabriel’s reach, grabbed his wrist, and twisted it until the metal clattered against the baseboard. Gabriel drove an elbow into Victor’s ribs, scrambling for the dropped gun, but Victor shoved him into the paneled wall with a dull thud.
The heavy double doors blew inward with a metallic bang.
Tactical lights cut white beams through the crimson haze, blinding in the dark. Booted steps pounded the floor.
“Federal agents! Hands where we can see them!”
Gabriel didn’t freeze. He clawed at his ankle holster, bringing up a snub-nosed backup piece. Victor already had Gabriel’s first gun off the floor. The barrel leveled straight between Gabriel’s eyes. His finger tightened against the trigger.
Gabriel panted, blood on his lip, staring down the iron sights. “Shoot then,” he spat. “Finish it.”
Victor held the gun steady. His jaw set like stone. Tessa stood frozen by the dead monitor, her breath caught in her throat, waiting for the gunshot that would end it all.
Victor didn’t fire. He eased his finger off the trigger, reversed the weapon in his grip, and cracked the heavy grip across Gabriel’s cheekbone. Gabriel slumped against the wall, groaning as his backup pistol clattered away.
“Hands on the ground! Do not move!”
Detective Mara Ellis pushed through the front line of officers, her badge gleaming under her dark windbreaker. Two officers tackled Gabriel to the carpet, wrenching his arms behind his back. Zip-ties bit into his wrists.
Ellis stepped past them, her gun drawn, her eyes locked on Victor. He set Gabriel’s weapon on the table and stepped back with both hands open at waist height.
“He’s all yours, Detective,” Victor said.
Tessa dropped beside Liam, pulling a pocketknife from her jacket to slice through the nylon cord binding his hands. Liam rubbed his raw wrists, his head hanging low. “Tess, I’m sorry. I—”
“Not here,” she said. “We talk outside.”
Ellis glanced at Tessa, then at the glowing prompt frozen on the laptop screen. “Is that what I think it is?”
“The compliance freeze sent the records straight to the SEC and your field office,” Tessa said. She stood up, flattening her rumpled sleeves. “Thirty-two million. Every shell company, every corrupt official on the payroll.”
Gabriel glared up from the floor, his cheek bleeding onto the carpet as officers hauled him to his feet. “You tore it all down, Victor. You’re going with me.”
Victor didn’t answer. He watched the officers drag Gabriel out into the blue flash of police cruisers, his eyes flat, cold, and finally unburdened.
