Mother’s Bowl
My Stepmother Stole My Mother’s Memories—But My Grandfather Had Planned for Everything · Capítulo 2
The mover shifted the desk in his arms. He was waiting for someone to tell him where to put it. Patricia checked something on her clipboard with an ink pen. “The donation truck’s here. If you want to keep anything, now’s the time to say so.”
Richard rubbed his wedding band with his thumb. “Emily, stop clinging to relics.”
She stared at him. “You’re letting her throw out Mom’s life.”
His jaw moved once. “Patricia has done more for this house in six months than your mother did in years. She’s trying to make this place livable.”
Patricia’s mouth tightened, then opened again into that careful smile. “Your mother had beautiful things, but grief turns them into clutter.”
That did it. Emily walked past her, down the hall, and saw the moving crew already at the garage with the scrap boxes. One of them had a blue ceramic bowl wrapped in old newspaper.
She grabbed it before he could toss it into the bin. Her mother had kept change in it on the kitchen counter. Pennies, keys, a folded receipt. The glaze was cracked near the rim.
Patricia looked over from the doorway. “If that’s the bowl from the garage, it’s trash.”
Emily held it tighter.
Outside, the van door slammed. The desk was gone in the back with the rest of the house’s old things, and Emily stood there holding a bowl while her father watched her like she was the one making trouble.
