The Neighboring Woman Dropped a Damaged Electrical Cable Into My Family’s Pool — All Because of One Reason I Couldn’t Believe · Capítulo 5

Adrian spent Sunday morning sitting at the kitchen table with an external hard drive and five months of archived motion alerts. Nicole stood behind his chair, her coffee going cold on the counter.

“Start at May,” she said. “Before school let out.”

He dragged the slider back through eighty gigs of video. The camera mounted under the rear patio eave recorded every stray cat and palm frond gust, but by June 3, the motion log spiked. At 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, the wooden gate swung wide.

Two men in high-visibility vests walked onto the stone deck. One pushed an aluminum measuring wheel, clicking it along the pale travertine border. The second man held a laser measure against the stucco boundary wall and kept a yellow clipboard tucked under his elbow. Denise stood just inside the gate threshold, wearing sunglasses and an athletic visor, pointing toward the deep end.

“They’re taking parcel dimensions,” Adrian said. His hand tightened on the computer mouse. “That’s not an estimate for a deck stain.”

The clip ran seven minutes. The man with the clipboard crouched beside the pool pump, writing down the serial number on the filtration unit. He photographed the dual-speed motor and the chlorinator, checked the breaker box mounted to the house wall, and noted something on his tablet. Denise checked her watch, signaled to both men, and escorted them out through the side corridor.

“She didn’t just market it to guests,” Nicole said, her voice dropping into a flat, hard register. “She surveyed our property for a lender.”

Adrian clicked to July 18. Another entry, this time an electrical inspector with a digital voltmeter checking the exterior ground rod behind the Foster equipment shed. Denise had held the gate open for him, too, nodding as the man tagged an outlet box.

Adrian’s phone vibrated against the placemat. The screen displayed Rachel Somers’s office number. He tapped speaker.

“Adrian,” Rachel said, her voice dry and steady. “I have the underwriting package Crane’s appraisal firm flagged.”

“We just found two survey crews on our June tapes,” Adrian said. “They measured the coping and the pump equipment.”

“That tracks,” Rachel said. A single rap of her pen echoed over the line. “Denise Harrow didn’t just submit marketing brochures. She filed a signed document titled ‘Private Recreational Amenity License’ to satisfy underwriting conditions for a four-million-dollar commercial line. Your signature is on the second page.”

Adrian stared at the screen where the two surveyors walked his pool deck. “I’ve never signed anything with her.”

“I know,” Rachel said. “Get down to my office. We need to look at what she copied.”
