My Father Never Said He Was Proud of Me — Until the Day He Nearly Wasn’t Here

My father James was not a man who used soft words. He showed love the way he’d been taught to: by fixing things, by showing up, by staying quiet.

Growing up, I mistook his silence for indifference. It took me most of my adult life to understand it was something closer to fear.

The call came on a Tuesday. He’d collapsed at the hardware store where he’d worked for thirty-one years.

Sitting beside his hospital bed, I finally said the things I’d been carrying since I was a teenager, not knowing if he could hear any of it.

When his eyes opened two days later, the first thing he did was apologize — not for what he’d done, but for everything he’d never said.
