The investigator did not move. He kept one hand on the fender and one near his wrist, the place the officer had twisted a moment ago. The sockets on the concrete still shone where they had rolled into the sunlight.

The officer reached for his radio. “Dispatch, I need confirmation on a stolen vehicle complaint, black late-sixties muscle car, driveway at—”

He stopped.

The radio cracked with a voice before he finished. “Unit on scene, stand by.”

Then another voice came through, clipped and flat. “That complaint did not come from dispatch. It was phoned in as a non-emergency by a mobile number registered to your account, Officer.”

For a second nobody spoke.

The officer’s hand stayed on the radio mic. His shoulders tightened under the vest.

“You sure about that?” he said.

The dispatch voice did not change. “We’re certain. The number resolves to your personal cell. We have the time stamp.”

The neighbor made a small sound behind her phone. Not a word. Just breath.

The investigator looked at the officer’s face, then at the dark square on his chest.

“Is your body camera recording?”

The officer’s mouth pulled thin. “Battery issue.”

“Then why is the indicator dark?”

No answer.

A cruiser rolled up behind the first one. Another car followed, slower, tires crunching on the curb. The gate of the scene, once ordinary morning light and a man working on his car, had shut.

A supervisor stepped out of the second cruiser and scanned the driveway, the lawn, the open hood, the scattered sockets, the phone lying on the hood where it had been tossed. He took in the officer, then the investigator, then the neighbor’s raised hand.

“Everyone hold position,” he said.

The investigator kept his voice even. “I’d like this preserved.”

The supervisor nodded once, already reaching for gloves.

Across the street, the neighbor kept filming. On the windshield, the red light stayed on.
