By dawn the yard held two horses, a wagon bed stacked with crates, and the smell of frost. Margaret rode beside the driver for the first miles, then with Charles when the road widened. He did not crowd her with talk. He asked where she preferred the flour sacks kept, how many hands came through the main house at noon, and whether she liked the smoke from cedar or oak.

When Charles’s ranch finally came into view, she saw the kitchen first. A long line of windows. A stacked woodpile. Smoke lifting from one chimney.

Inside, the cooks looked up from their boards and pans. One had flour dust on her sleeve. Another kept a knife still over a pile of onions.

“This is Margaret Ellis,” Charles said. “She’ll be setting your schedules and overseeing the kitchens.”

No one laughed. No one looked away for long either.

Margaret put both hands on the weekly prep sheets Charles handed her. Names. Quantities. Days. She drew a line through one shift, wrote in a second hand, and set the roasting order by the stove heat instead of the clock.

The kitchen stayed quiet while she worked.

Then the youngest cook edged closer and asked, “Is that better?”

Margaret checked the board, then nodded. “It will be.”

Heard from the doorway, Charles said nothing. He only watched her mark the page and kept the room open around her.
