Margaret set her apron on the table and laid her spoon beside it, then looked once around the kitchen as if to fix every board in place.

The hairline crack ran across the worktable from the bread board to the far edge. She rested one fingertip on it.

Charles stood near the stove with the contract spread open. “Take your time,” he said.

The paper had been read aloud twice. It named her work at his three ranches, the wage, the travel, the kitchens under her charge, and the letters she could send home. No hidden year. No fine print with a trap tucked inside it.

Margaret picked up the pen. Her hand held steady after a breath.

“I understand it,” she said.

“Do you want me to go over any line again?”

She scanned the page once more. “No, sir. I believe it says what was agreed.”

“Good.” He folded his hands behind the chair back. “Then sign where marked.”

She wrote her name in the space he pointed out. The ink line came out even. She waited for it to dry, then set the pen down carefully, as if it were still needed.

Charles took the paper, checked the signature, and laid it flat. Then he held out his hand.

Margaret looked at it, then took it.

His grip was firm, not crushing. He gave one small nod, like a man closing a business deal and honoring it at the same time.

“Welcome aboard, Mrs. Ellis.”

She blinked once at the title. “Thank you, Mr. Bennett.”

He glanced toward the doorway. “The wagon leaves at first light. I’ve set a place for your trunk.”
