Lily carried the small cardboard box by both corners, her red canvas shoes scuffing the pale limestone. A purple satin ribbon dangled from the lid, dragging over the hot stone deck toward the edge of the water.

“Mama,” Lily said. “Look. Buh-fly.”

Vivienne did not lower her wine glass. She sat beneath the nine-foot white linen umbrella, legs crossed in ivory silk trousers, watching the eastern lawn where thirty guests stood around the raw bar. A catering waiter lifted a heavy silver tray of flutes, blocking the view from the lawn. Two men by the boxwood hedge threw their heads back in a loud burst of laughter.

Clara turned toward the outdoor console table three steps away to grab a cloth napkin. “Careful by the edge, Lily,” she said.

In that three-second gap, Vivienne reached down. Her manicured hand hit the center of Lily’s small chest with a flat, forward shove.

The girl went backward into the ten-foot end of the pool.

The splash was heavy and flat. The lavender box hit the water an instant later, bobbing on the turquoise surface as the ribbon unspooled like an oily violet ribbon across the ripples. From beneath the shade of the umbrella came a short, quiet chuckle—a breath through teeth that sounded like someone catching a private joke.

Clara dropped the napkins. She hit the wet stone on her knees, the rough rock tearing through her linen slacks. Lily had already gone under, her small hands clawing at nothing, air bubbles boiling up from her dark hair.

Clara plunged both arms into the water, hooked her fingers into the straps of Lily’s yellow sundress, and hauled upward with her back. Water sloshed over the coping. Lily came up coughing water, her mouth wide in a gagging wail, both fists knotted tight. Clara pulled the toddler against her ribs on the deck, wrapping her arms around the shivering body.

“I have you,” Clara whispered, coughing water from her own mouth. “I’ve got you, sweetheart.”
